Situation in Ukraine's Borodyanka 'more dreadful' than Bucha – Zelenskiy

INTERNATIONAL: Ukraine's prosecutor general on Thursday 7th April reported 26 bodies were found under two ruined buildings in Borodyanka, northwest of Kyiv. Emergency services worked to clear the rubble after the collapse of the two buildings, said by a resident to have been caused by a bomb dropped from a plane.

"I left approximately at 7.30am, and at quarter or ten to (8am) I was on my way back... when the plane came on and dropped a bomb," said Vadym Zagrebelnyi, who said he had several family members trapped under the rubble.

Rescuers were hoping some families had sheltered in the basement, which could have remained intact after the building collapse.

Ukraine's prosecutor general, Iryna Venediktova, said 650 dead bodies had been found in cities across the Kyiv region, including 40 children.

One of the worst affected cities in the region is Bucha, 35 kilometres northwest of the capital, where local officials have said more than 300 people were killed by Russian forces, and around 50 of them were executed.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday that the situation in Borodyanka is "significantly more dreadful" than in Bucha, without citing any evidence.

Borodyanka resident who said "I was miraculously lucky. They were increasing shelling every day, and on the 2nd (of March) we could not stand it anymore and I went with my wife and a child to walk them away as far as possible from the central street. I left approximately at 7.30am, and at quarter or ten to (8am) I was on my way back to there (shelter in the basement) when the plane came on and dropped a bomb."

Another Borodyanka resident said "I saw what we can see here now. I came and saw that there is no building anymore. I saw that I couldn't do anything. I stood there for a while and went to pick up my wife and child and we walked on foot from Borodyanka as we didn’t have any other transportation means."

"In the Kyiv region, we find, in the Kyiv region - Makariv, Borodyanka, Bucha, Hostomel, Irpin - we found 650 dead bodies, from them it is 40 dead bodies only kids.".

"Vladimir Putin is the main war criminal of 21st century. But actually we can suspect in Ukraine legislation you know about immunity. Three persons in any state have immunity: presidents, ministry of foreign affairs and the head of government. That's why when they on the opposition we can't start prosecute them in Ukraine. But again it's norms of international law. But in the international courts we can do it." Prosecutor general of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova, had told reporters.

Lawyer with the global rights compliance law firm and foundation, Wayne Jordash, said that. "When you see that pattern developing then it becomes clearer and clearer and clearer that what we're talking about is war crimes and also crimes against humanity. I would say in Bucha they may even go further it's unclear at the moment, but there are indications there of genocide. That's what I would say."
